Typical portable solar power systems boast a large capacity inverter (usually the item that gives them their ‘power’ rating) but not on an efficient recharging system. Pretty much all of the ones that have an available solar package list a solar array output that is a fraction of the power of the inverter. (Example: 2000-watt inverter batteries being recharged with a 200-watt solar panel system). This means that if a user substantially drains the batteries, the recovery time exceeds the window of available sunlight and solar charging capacity. In simpler terms, a user will not be able to use the system and also recharge it in a typical day. Generally speaking, a solar array needs to be large enough to not only charge the batteries but also run anything that needs power at the same time. That means that the solar array should be at least 2.5 times the daily load of power needed.
The FoldArrayTM solar panel angle is fixed like you would have on a rooftop. The average angle from the horizon is equal to your regional latitude. The sun will track +/- 15 vertical degrees from nominal angle depending on the season. Here in North Texas we are at 32 degrees so my Fold Array is set for 32o. We will make other versions available with other angles yet to be determined. For example, Miami FL is 28o and Seattle WA is 47o.
We are Miller Image Tech, a Fort Worth TX-based scenery shop that has been in business for over 35 years. In March of 2020 Covid directives shut down our industry. Greg spent the first half of those two years perfecting the FoldArray TM solar panel support concept and companion electronics package. We still have a full shop that now produces both commercial scenery and the metal structures for our FoldArray TM products. If you want to see more about Miller Image Tech, visit Millerit.com
